The VIA Project team recently participated in a panel presentation, “HIV/AIDS and Latino/Hispanic Populations” at the National AIDS Fund’s Southern Initiative convening in New Orleans.  Sharing information about the state of HIV among the Latino populations, including services available, ongoing needs, strategies for action and impact of the disease, the panel included Guillermo Chacon, Executive Director of Latino AIDS Commission, Oscar Salinas of FACES- and New Orleans AIDS Service organization and Robin Lewy, VIA Initiative Liaison, Rural Women’s Health Project.

Although the findings from the VIA Initiative only represented a portion of the responses, the community indicated a strong interest in taking action to improve its well-being and prevent the spread of HIV. As you view the PowerPoint presentation, you’ll notice that in the last slides, the community’s suggestions for responding to the AIDS crisis offers a glimpse of steps that can be taken to respond to the Hispanic community’s interest in raising their HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention!

La semana pasada, el equipo de VIA presentó los hallazgos preliminares de nuestro trabajo durante la reunión celebrada en New Orleans entre los recipientes de fondos de los proyectos del Sur que han sido financiados por el National AIDS Fund.  Nuestra presentación fue parte de la sesión sobre “El VIH y las poblaciones Latinas/Hispanas” en la que también participación Guillermo Chacón (presidente de la Comisión Latina sobre el SIDA), y Oscar Salinas de FACES (una organización de servicio para las personas con el VIH en New Orleans).

Aunque los datos presentados representan solamente una análisis parcial de la encuesta de VIA, ya es muy evidente el interés de la comunidad en el tema del VIH/SIDA.  En las últimas diapositivas (PowerPoint), ofrecimos un vistazo de las recomendaciones comunitarias de cómo mejorar el bienestar de la comunidad en relación al VIH y otros problemas.  ¡La comunidad Hispana inmigrante está interesada en aumentar su conocimiento sobre el VIH y promover la prevención!
